This song took a few months of hard work. I wanted to capture Paul's idea of dying with Christ: being crucified with him (Gal 2:20); buried with him (Rom 6:4); and looking forward to sharing in his resurrection (Rom 6:5). What powerful imagery to remind us that our whole life belongs to Christ!

THIS LIFE I LIVE

This life I live is not my own
For my Redeemer paid the price
He took it to be his alone
To be his treasure and his prize
The things of earth I leave behind
To live in worship of my King
His is the right to rule my life
Mine is the joy to live for him

I died to sin upon the cross
I'm bound to Jesus in his death
The old is gone and now I must
Rely on him for every breath
With every footstep that I tread
What mysteries he has in store
I cannot know what lies ahead
But know that he has gone before

There is a voice that pierced the grave
A power that rolled the stone away
A sound of life, I know I'm saved
The voice of God has called my name
So I will rise, and in the air
Behold the glory of the King
I will not fear to meet him there
I know my life is hid with him

This song came about by accident: I'd written the tune, and had an idea for the lyrics, but as I was trying to shape them to fit, Robert Lowry's hymn interrupted, and I realized he'd already said what I wanted to say! The second verse and chorus are mine, but you'll notice the references to the original chorus in mine..

NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD OF JESUS

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For pardon, this I see:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For cleansing, this my plea:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

How deep the store of Jesus' love
How rich the flow that cleanses us
How great the debt I owed,
Now it's nothing by the blood of Jesus

What can break the power of death?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Life and hope unto the earth
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What satisfies the law?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What opens heaven's door?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

How deep the store of Jesus' love...

Nothing can for sin atone
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Nothing good that I have done
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is my hope and peace:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is my righteousness:
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

How deep the store of Jesus' love...

This song arose out of a personal devotion on Psalm 29, and was written in one morning. The power of the voice of the Lord was the same power seen in Jesus, the Word of God.

THE VOICE OF THE LORD

(PSALM 29)

The voice of the Lord
Is over the waters
With power and strength
And glorious thunder

And the earth will shake
The trees will fall
As the voice of God is heard
See the flame burst forth
New life is born
And his people cry:
"Glory!"

The voice of the Lord
Is mighty to conquer
The power of death
Is power no longer

And the lame will dance
The blind will see
And the dead will rise again
For the Word of God
Has walked with us
And he makes us cry:
"Glory!"

The Lord enthroned forever, He is King
The Lord enthroned forever, He is King
The Lord enthroned forever...

And the earth will shake...

And the lame will dance...

The Lord enthroned forever, He is King
The Lord enthroned forever, He is King
The Lord enthroned forever, He is King

Written while I was still at university, this song has been recorded by Ruth Buchanan and Con Campbell. The ideas I owe to 1 Peter 1.

THIS IS THE WORD OF GOD

This is the word of God
This is the truth you have believed
This is the word the prophets searched
To see God's plan fulfilled
This is the Spirit's voice
Not from the will of man
And though all men will fall
We know the word of God will stand

This is our only hope
Redeemed with Jesus' precious blood
Saved from the empty way of life
Through faith and hope in God
And since you call on him
Who judges all the earth
Live your lives in reverent fear
Remembering your Redeemer's worth

This is the word of God
That even angels long to read
They wonder at the work of Christ
To meet our greatest need
And though we cannot see
And trials test our faith
Our God will be our joy
And our belief will be his praise

We have been born again
Through Jesus rising from the dead
We know that our inheritance
Won't perish spoil or fade
This is the living hope
The mercy of the Lord
Who by his power will shield
All those who hold him to his word
